Contests, Awards & Whatnot
Over the course of my unfathomable existence I have managed to win a few interesting contests. They usually had something to do with Monty Python or Spam go figure. I have listed here some of the contests I've won and the rewards I have reaped from them. I also list other web sites that dare to use the name Crunchy Frog (I was the first), and other Dale Novaks that can be found online.
Contests (and stuff) I've Won
Monty Pythons' Complete Waste of Time (c. 1994) This was the first of the Monty Python computer games. They had a contest to see who could solve the game in the fastest time. The grand prize was a complete computer system. I missed that by 12 seconds, but I did get second place and the Monty Python's Instant CD Collection boxed set.
Spam Carving Contest (May 4th, 1997) This contest was held at the Maricopa County Library Center. I created a little castle out of Spam and called it "Spamalot", and it won First Place! I won a Spam T-shirt and a can of Spam. Bill Goodykoontz of the Arizona Republic also participated in the contest and wrote an article about it.
Spot the Looney (April 29, 2000) This took place on the Eric Idle Exploits Monty Python tour. Eric called up people from the audience to compete in Spot the Looney. The audience voted me the greatest looney, so I got to have my liver removed backstage and chat with Eric Idle a bit before I returned to my seat. He also gave me a copy of his CD, Eric Idle Exploits Monty Python.
Dreamtoons by Jesse Reklaw (July 5, 2000) Jesse has a comic strip and web site called
Slow Wave. People submit their strange or interesting dreams to him and he turns them into comic strips. He published a collection of these strips called Dreamtoons. Not only did my dream, Apartment Chicken, get in the book, it was also selected to appear on the cover. For this great honor I received $10 and a free copy of the book.
BBC America Spam Art Contest (November, 2002) The BBC America channel held a contest to honor Monty Python through Spam art. This contest was wide open to any media (including Spam itself) and I submitted 3 entries, all of which I had created prior to this contest. One of my entries, a Hormel Annual Report cover I had created in art school, won an honorable mention. I also submitted a photo of "Spamalot", my winning Spam sculpture, and it won 4th place in the contest. My prize? 12 rolls of Monty Python toilet paper. You can see the 25 honorable mention winners (mine is #14 in the gallery) and the 5 finalists (mine is #4) at the BBC America site.
